We at TheFatGirlShow are strong believers in bodily autonomy. I have no right to tell anyone what to do with their body. Your body, your choice.
So while Rebel Wilson can gain or lose as much weight as she wants, she has no right to shame the community that built, and supported her, in the process.

Brendan Fraser and The Whale

12/2/2022

No one is denying that Brendan Fraser is a talented actor, in fact it is kind of depressing how many people are just now realizing this fact, especially that they're basing it on his performance in the offensively fatphobic film The Whale. Regardless of his talent, and his slight connection to the the material,  The Whale is an atrocious portrayal of fat people which could've been rectified with the involvement of actual fat people both behind the camera, as well as in front.

Fatphobia in the Oscar Nominees

3/26/2022

With the Oscars a day away, quite a few films are continuing to make headlines. On their way to the Academy Awards, the incredible cast of CODA keeps picking up statues, allowing them to remind the industry that representation matters, authenticity matters, inclusion matters. Other films nominated in the Best Picture category have been making headlines for less positive criticism, including Licorice Pizza’s blatantly offensive racism. As with every year, the Oscars drum up discussions about diversity in film, but no one seems to be talking about the fatphobia baked into our entertainment.
Maybe it’s time to start.

Reginald the Vampire, based on the Johnny B. Truant "Fat Vampire" book series, stars Jacob Batalon (Spider-Man's Ned) as Reginald, a fat treadmill salesman who gets turned into a Vampire. Not only did the series just wrap filming this week, but the series be on SYFY this summer. Plus, both Amazon and Hulu have picked up streaming rights for international territories, according to Variety.

I haven't yet read the book series - and based on the description listed on GoodReads, I'm afraid I won't like it - but I'm pleased to see more plus size representation on TV, especially when it's on a channel I tend to enjoy.
Will you be watching Reginald the Vampire on SYFY? Have you read the book series that inspired it? Let me know!

'Butter' - Movie Review

2/25/2022

It's only February, but perhaps one of the most obtuse movies to come out in 2022 is Butter - based on the Erin Jade Lange novel of the same name - which tells the story of a fat high schooler who is bullied so severely "he plans an incredible social media stunt that will risk his life" inadvertently gaining him attention and popularity.
"As the day arrives can he really do it?"
The screenplay, written by Paul A. Kaufman who also directs the movie, is surprisingly not a dark comedy, nor a satire. It's a straight-forward attempt at a Young Adult feel-good coming-of-age story starring newcomer Alex Kersting alongside icons like Mira Sorvino and Mykelti Willliamson.

Peacemaker Season Finale - Why End on Fatphobia?

2/18/2022

HBO Max's Peacemaker series wrapped up its first season today with an epic showdown between our team of misfits and the alien butterflies infiltrating Earth. As the episode unfolded, audiences are treated to scenes of badassery, especially from the kickass character of Leota Adebayo, played beautifully by Danielle Brooks.
Picture
As each of the 8 episodes ended, a mid-credits scene was tacked on with an extra bit of humor that likely was cut from the episode for time. For some reason though, this final episode, tied up the season with fatphobia and "concern trolling".
All I can ask is: Why?!

Another Day, Another Fat Suit

2/13/2022

It feels like just yesterday when Sarah Paulson publicly admitted regret in adding padding to play Linda Tripp for Impeachment: American Crime Story. Yet Renee Zellweger, star and producer of NBC's The Thing About Pam, is also fat-suiting up for the title role of Pam.
Picture
During NBC's Press Day last week, journalist Whitney Friedlander craftily asked the question many of us have been wondering since the first "Renee Zellweger Unrecognizable" headlines appeared about a week prior: Why cast Renee Zellweger in a fat suit instead of a fat actor?
